Written by Parriva — December 24, 2025

Three years after the femicide of Cecilia Monzón, a court in Puebla handed down a sentence against Javier López Zavala.

The former member of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies was found guilty of the femicide of the mother of his child, along with two other perpetrators of the crime.

The court reached its decision after a trial that lasted nearly a year and was marked by delaying tactics, numerous postponements, and constant public pressure.

The victim’s family requested the maximum sentence of 60 years in prison, as stipulated in the Penal Code, while the exact length of the sentence is still to be determined.

The femicide occurred in May 2022 in San Pedro Cholula, where two hitmen on a motorcycle shot Monzón while she was driving her SUV.
