In an interview on the ‘Gusgri Podcast’, Mexican priest José de Jesús Aguilar revealed that, in the mid-1980s, he celebrated Mass for drug traffickers Rafael Caro Quintero and Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo—known as “Don Neto”—inside a prison, unaware at the time of who they were.

A Corpus Christi Mass that ended up in the kingpins’ prison
The well-known Catholic priest recounts that the event took place on the feast of Corpus Christi, as he was leaving the Metropolitan Cathedral with a children’s choir. A group of people approached him and asked if he would celebrate Mass in a prison—a request that did not seem unusual to him, as he had already been working with correctional facilities and juvenile detention centers for years.

“Could you come and celebrate Mass at the prison?” they asked. The priest agreed, suspecting nothing: “I thought, ‘Well, it’s Corpus Christi; they must want a Mass for that, right?'” Before bringing the children from the choir along, he sought permission from their parents—”Let me speak to their parents,” he recalled—and the guardians raised no objections.
