On the afternoon of Friday, May 23, an intense armed confrontation between members of the Mexican Army and armed civilians in the community of Bariometo, Navolato, left at least two dead. Among them was Jorge Humberto Figueroa Benítez, alias “El 27” or “La Perris,” who belonged to the criminal group “Los Chapitos.”
Military sources confirmed that Figueroa Benítez was identified as one of those killed after an armed group ambushed a military convoy patrolling the rural area. The exchange of fire generated fear among the population; videos shared on social media captured the explosions and the subsequent military mobilization.
The shooting erupted while soldiers were patrolling the rural area and were attacked by an armed group. In response, the officers repelled the attack, initiating a high-intensity confrontation. Authorities have not yet revealed the number of injured people, although it has been confirmed that there are some wounded.
The Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat reported that, following the attack, a joint operation was activated with state forces to reinforce security in the area and prevent further violence.
