A black bear surprised a group of friends who were relaxing in a cabin in the tourist area of Monterreal.
According to local media, the young people experienced an “unexpected encounter.” A video captured the moment the bear approached the vehicle and “had the ability to open the door.” The incident occurred near a cabin located in San Antonio de las Alazanas, in the tourist area of Monterreal, in the municipality of Arteaga, Coahuila.
The friends were “petrified” to see the bear standing in front of them, according to information provided through social media. What somehow allowed them to remain calm was that the animal never “showed aggression.” In another shot, the bear is seen trying to enter the young people’s cabin.
What to do if you encounter a bear?
The IO Foundation recommends above all else, staying calm. It also offers this:
Stay calm, don’t run, and don’t shout. Bears roar when attacked, and if you shout, they may understand that you’re threatening them and try to defend themselves. Never run! Bears can travel at 50 km/h, and if you run, they’ll definitely chase you. Bears don’t run well downhill either, but they’re probably better at it than you.
Running is not recommended.
Climbing a tree isn’t a great idea either; bears climb very well.
In extreme cases, cover your head and play dead. It may save your life, but you’ll definitely get scratched.
Always carry bear spray (cayenne or pepper spray). It allows for multiple bursts and reaches about 5 meters. The wind should be directed away from you and toward the bear.
