A gathering organized to watch the match between the Mexican National Team and Ecuador during the 2026 World Cup ended in tragedy in the municipality of Yautepec, Morelos, after an armed group stormed a multi-purpose sports court and opened fire on the attendees. The attack left a preliminary toll of three dead and nine injured, including the husband of a mayoral pre-candidate for the municipality.
The incident occurred on the night of Tuesday, June 30, at the multi-purpose court in the Rancho Nuevo neighborhood, where dozens of families—including minors—were watching the broadcast of the “Tricolor” match when the attack took place.
The Morelos State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed the start of investigations and the activation of the corresponding protocols.
“The Morelos State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) activated the corresponding legal protocols for intervention at the scene after three people lost their lives and nine others were injured,” the agency reported in a statement.
The institution specified that personnel from the General Coordination of Forensic Services are carrying out technical-legal procedures regarding “the bodies of two women and one man—two found at the scene and one at a hospital.”
