Social media has served to expose gentrification in various parts of Mexico and the way some foreigners take advantage of the country’s economic conditions to stretch their dollars or euros and achieve a lifestyle they could hardly achieve in their countries.
This phenomenon has grabbed headlines in various media outlets and has provoked all kinds of opinions. While some argue that the presence of foreigners improves the appearance of cities, many others point out the disadvantages it brings, such as rising costs, displacement of the local population, and a change in the identity of communities.
Spaniards criticized for taking advantage of poverty in Oaxaca
Recently, one particular case gained visibility and criticism on social media. A group of young Spaniards traveled to Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, one of the country’s most beautiful tourist destinations, with the intention of “fulfilling their dream” and opening a hotel.
However, internet users questioned the method they intended to implement to achieve this goal.
The young man also admits that he intends to open a hotel in Puerto Escondido “without having any idea about the hotel business.” In the video, we can see them carrying out work on the premises: they tear down the kitchen, clean, and admit that they won’t be able to have everything ready in time.
