On March 14, 2026, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the former president of Mexico, posted a message on his X account in which he expressed his concern regarding the plight of the Cuban people. López Obrador stated: “I am in retirement, but it pains me that they seek to exterminate—because of their ideals of freedom and their defense of sovereignty—the brotherly people of Cuba.”
The former head of state addressed those who view the crisis on the island as a matter unrelated to them. To this end, he quoted General Lázaro Cárdenas during the Bay of Pigs invasion: “It is not permissible to advocate for our indifference toward their heroic struggle, for their fate is our own.”
Against this backdrop, López Obrador called upon the public to make donations in support of the Cuban population. He specified that contributions may be made to Banorte account 1358451779, held by the civil association *Humanidad con América Latina* (Humanity with Latin America).
