Family and friends identified the Mexican cadets when the training ship Cuauhtémoc collided with the Brooklyn Bridge around 8:20 p.m.
The cadets were identified as América Yamilet Sánchez and Adal Jair Marcos, who was nicknamed “Tyson.”
Sánchez was originally from Xalapa, Veracruz. The governor of that state, Rocío Nahle García, confirmed her death. “My love, support, and solidarity to her family,” she wrote on the social media platform X.
Marcos, for his part, was originally from Oaxaca and lived in Puebla, according to Mexican media.
The investigation into what caused the training ship to crash into the iconic Brooklyn Bridge remained active this Sunday, May 18, with the arrival of a team of specialists from the National Transportation Safety Board.
