The Mexico City Ministry of Mobility confirmed the death of Alicia Matías Teodoro, the woman who protected her granddaughter during the explosion at the Puente de la Concordia Bridge.
The 49-year-old woman died at the Magdalena de las Salinas Hospital of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), after two days in intensive care.
Mobility Secretary Héctor Ulises García Nieto confirmed the incident in a statement shared on social media.
“We deeply regret the sensitive death of Alicia Matías Teodoro, who died as a result of the incident reported near the Cetram Santa Martha,” read the message posted on social media.
An image of the woman covering a girl in front of the fire went viral on social media. Alicia and her granddaughter were rushed to the hospital after the explosion.
Her daughter told that the youngest girl, named Sule, was in stable condition, but had burns on her face, arms, and legs. Alicia Matías, meanwhile, was in intensive care, suffering third-degree burns over 98 percent of her body, her daughter revealed.
