A hail of bullets, a fire, and fuel theft: the keys to the attack against Ernesto Vázquez in Reynosa

Ernesto Cuitláhuac Vázquez Reyna, the delegate of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) in Tamaulipas, was murdered on the afternoon of Monday, August 4, during an armed attack on the streets of Reynosa. Due to the media coverage surrounding the case, various versions have emerged regarding what happened in this violent episode. Therefore, in this article, we will share the official information on the matter.

According to information released by police sources, on the afternoon of Monday, August 4, Ernesto Vázquez, the representative of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) in Tamaulipas, was driving along Miguel Hidalgo Boulevard when, near Plaza Engrei, he was intercepted by a convoy of trucks carrying armed men. Once they identified the official, they shot him dead immediately in broad daylight in front of dozens of people.

In the videos circulating on social media it can be seen that after the first attack, a second truck arrived in the area and its occupants continued with the hail of bullets to ensure they had killed Vázquez Reyna, later they fled, in addition, the official’s truck caught fire until it was charred, it is worth mentioning that it was reported that a grenade had been used, but this information has not been confirmed by the authorities.

Given these events, the Attorney General’s Office of Tamaulipas (FGJ) reported that the investigation of the case would be carried out in a coordinated manner with the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR), while the governor of Tamaulipas, Américo Villarreal, indicated that his government is fully willing to help clarify this unfortunate episode.
