Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called for an emergency meeting at City Hall on Monday to evaluate security in Los Angeles following what is being described as a terrorist attack on Jewish demonstrators in Boulder, Colorado.
Four women and four men, ranging in age from 52 to 88, were hospitalized in Denver on Sunday after a suspect used a makeshift flamethrower and threw an incendiary device into a crowd participating in a weekly event calling for the return of hostages taken by Hamas militants during the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
“What happened in Boulder, Colorado—an especially brutal targeting of elders—is an atrocious affront to the very fabric of our society and our values here in Los Angeles,” Bass said. “This was the second terrorist attack against Jews in two weeks.”
Bass noted that the Los Angeles Police Department is conducting extra patrols at houses of worship and community centers throughout the city. “Antisemitism will not be tolerated in this city,” she said.
The emergency meeting will take place after the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, observed from sundown Sunday through sundown Tuesday, which commemorates the giving of the Torah to Moses and the Israelites at Mount Sinai.
