Latino now faces serious federal charges that could put him in jail for up to 10 years
A South Los Angeles man and tow truck driver was arrested this week and faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison after he hauled away a governmental vehicle in the middle of an immigration action in Downtown Los Angeles on August 15.
Bobby Nunez, 33, is charged with theft of government property.
That day, according to a press release by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, Nunez illegally towed a vehicle used by federal agents who were arresting Tatiana Mafla-Martinez, 23, a Colombian immigrant.
Federal agents had boxed Martinez’ vehicle at the exit of a luxury apartment complex to prevent her from escaping and had their emergency lights on. While they struggled to detain Martinez, Nunez “got into his Dodge tow truck and towed one of the government vehicles that was boxing in Martinez’s vehicle. At the time of this interference, the government vehicle had its keys inside and a firearm locked in a safe inside it as well,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office press release indicates.
A video from the incident shows the car being towed away and the bewildered agents chasing after it momentarily.
Two days later, law enforcement saw Nunez’s tow truck parked in an assigned residential space at the same luxury apartment complex in downtown Los Angeles.
“Apparently, he thought it would be funny to interfere with our immigration enforcement operations. Now he can laugh behind bars while he faces justice,” wrote Bilal Essayli, Acting U.S. Attorney on X.
