Several organizations will rally today to demand a long-term emergency moratorium for tenants.
KeepLAHouse and other organizations will be holding a rally at the LA County Board of Supervisors Building to demand that the county immediately establish an emergency moratorium on evictions, in addition to other protections for tenants, such as a countywide rent freeze, and the enforcement of anti-price gouging laws and other additional tenant supports.
These demands have been a community demand in the face of the high cost of housing in Los Angeles, however, the devastation of various areas of the county by the devastating wildfires has pushed this situation to the breaking point.
Many workers, even if they do not live in those affected areas, will be harmed by their various jobs, whether in homes, restaurants, or other service areas. Neither the city nor the county has announced any additional protections for tenants.
“Keep LA Housed demands that the LA County Board of Supervisors and all affected Los Angeles cities enact an emergency eviction moratorium after the devastating fires that have displaced thousands of Angelenos.
“We also demand the state courts implement a court holiday to delay the processing of current eviction cases until the region can recover from this devastating catastrophe.
“No one should be evicted during or as a result of this emergency,” the organization said in a statement.
Furthermore, anyone who has any questions about their rights as tenants can contact the Housing Rights Center (HRC) to support them in both Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
“This has been a devastating week for so many in our community. The Housing Rights Center (HRC) is here to support #LACounty and #VenturaCounty residents as we navigate this emergency together.
HRC offers free, private, and confidential housing counseling to tenants and landlords,” they announced on their social networks.
