Bariatric and plastic surgery remain the most requested surgical procedures by foreign patients in Tijuana, said Fabián Roberto Walters Arballo, president of the Baja Health Cluster.

He acknowledged that the rate of patient influx in medical units has slowed slightly recently due to factors such as inflation in the United States and political uncertainty.

However, he emphasized that the city still has the opportunity to receive many patients by having top-quality facilities and healthcare professionals, which will build customer confidence.

Rebound in Plastic and Bariatric Surgery

He explained that the majority of surgical procedures from a health tourism perspective have been plastic surgery and bariatric surgery in general, which he mentioned have seen a significant increase.
He explained that it was estimated there were around 250 to 300 bariatric surgeries per day and approximately 150 to 200 plastic surgeries during the peak of Tijuana’s medical tourism.

“It’s a bit difficult to quantify now because there has been a reduction, but many favorable numbers remain; we’re perhaps talking about a reduction of approximately 50%, in some cases up to 60%,” he stated.
