Brayan Rayo-Garzón, a Colombian migrant, died on April 8 while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

On April 10, the agency shared the news of the Colombian national’s death in a statement. ICE revealed that he died after being found unconscious in the Phelps County Jail in Rolla, Missouri.

The agency notified the appropriate agencies of the death, including the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General and the ICE Office of Professional Responsibility. ICE also notified the man’s next of kin.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement revealed that Brayan Rayo-Garzón entered the United States on November 13, 2023, near San Ysidro, California, without authorization from an immigration officer. An immigration judge ordered his deportation on June 12, 2024.

According to the agency, the man was arrested for shoplifting in 2024, and ICE arrested him on March 25 after he was arrested for credit card fraud by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

In the statement announcing the death of Brayan Rayo-Garzón, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) stated that it “remains committed” to ensuring that all individuals in its custody are in “safe, secure, and humane environments.”
