A 35-year-old American man, identified as Chad Eberley, was arrested in the border city of Piedras Negras after carrying out an armed attack that left three people dead and one seriously wounded in the city of Saltillo, Coahuila.

The events occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at a home in the Espinosa Mireles neighborhood. According to initial reports from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the assailant arrived at the residence intending to see his 3-year-old son; however, because he had a restraining order against him, a heated argument ensued. When those present refused to allow him contact with the child, the man pulled out a firearm and shot at the family.

Two women and a man who tried to stop the attacker from taking the child died instantly at the scene. A fourth person suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to the IMSS General Hospital No. 2, where they are reported to be in critical condition.

The victims were identified as the stepfather, Emmanuel Montero; the mother-in-law, Ana Laura de León Mora; the sister-in-law, Laura Jaqueline Mora; and Litzy Mora, who was shot in the head and left in critical condition.

After the attack, the assailant fled the scene after abducting his son. In response to the alert, Coahuila authorities deployed a multidisciplinary and inter-institutional operation involving the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the State Public Security Secretariat, the Saltillo Police Department, the Mexican Army, and the National Guard.

Due to the possibility that the suspect might attempt to cross the border to escape to his country of origin, the state prosecutor’s office issued an urgent notification to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to reinforce surveillance at the checkpoints.
