Alfonso Fernández Magallón—alias “Poncho” or “La Quiringua,” identified by Mexican and U.S. authorities as the leader of the Los Reyes Cartel—was admitted this Tuesday to Federal Social Readaptation Center (Cefereso) No. 1, “El Altiplano,” in the State of Mexico, following his arrest last Saturday in Michoacán.
His transfer from the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime (FEMDO) to the maximum-security prison took place under heavy security, after the alleged criminal leader was handed over to federal authorities following his capture in an operation carried out in the municipality of Los Reyes de Salgado.
Fernández Magallón was arrested on August 1 by Mexican Army personnel, supported by the National Guard and other security agencies. The operation triggered a reaction from the criminal group he allegedly led, resulting in road blockades and vehicle fires across the region.
Following his arrest, members of the Los Reyes Cartel set up blockades at various points in Michoacán—primarily in the municipalities of Los Reyes and Peribán—where the burning of vehicles, including a passenger bus, was reported.
