The celebrations in the streets of Mexico City following the Mexican National Team’s victory over South Africa in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup on Thursday, June 11, produced an event that went viral: the appearance of a duck walking around wearing a Mexican team jersey.
This is Merlin, a little duck who accompanies his owners selling bottled water on the streets of the capital. In an interview with ESPN, his owner Karla, accompanied by her son, shared details about the animal’s diet, his age, and the emotional significance he holds in their lives.
“I tamed him, I trained him to be comfortable here. At first, I used a harness because he was obviously afraid of the avenues, the people, and the noise. As he got used to it, we took off the harness, and now he follows us around. He eats special duck food, fruits, vegetables, protein, and once a week, carnitas tacos,” commented Merlin’s owner.
Karla explained that the process of taming Merlin began with patience and safety measures. She said that at first, she used a harness to walk him because the animal was afraid of the avenues, the noise, and the presence of people. Over time, Merlin got used to the urban environment and was able to walk freely alongside her and her son.
Merlin’s diet is varied and tailored to his needs. According to his owner, she prepares a special diet that includes duck food, fruits, vegetables, and protein. As part of their routines, once a week she offers him carnitas tacos, a food that, according to her, Merlin enjoys as a special treat.
