Violence has escalated in the municipality of Escuinapa, Sinaloa, since the end of last year and has not abated. The most recent incident that outraged residents occurred early Monday morning, when 14-year-old Grecia Guadalupe Gallardo Ulloa and her uncle, Arturo Ramiro Quintero Ortega, were shot and killed while on their way to a hospital.
Following the double homicide, the mayor of Escuinapa, Víctor Manuel Díaz Simental, acknowledged that the violence has overwhelmed state authorities, who lack the necessary response capacity.
In an interview with Noroeste, the mayor also acknowledged that the population may be angry about the climate of insecurity, and therefore he will request a greater security presence to ensure their long-term well-being.
“Believe me, I agree with them; there is anger because the authorities have not been able to respond appropriately to the situation. That is the reality, and it has overwhelmed us,” he commented.
