The U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana issued a security alert this Tuesday for American citizens traveling to Los Cabos, following reports of recent clashes between criminal groups and Mexican security forces near the San José del Cabo International Airport.
In a message disseminated via social media, the diplomatic mission stated that it is aware of reports regarding two security incidents that occurred in the vicinity of the airport terminal serving the Cabo San Lucas region, and warned that further violent incidents could take place.
Although the incidents occurred outside traditional tourist zones, the consulate emphasized that numerous American citizens use this airport to travel to tourist destinations within the region; therefore, it urged them to remain aware of their surroundings, particularly in the immediate vicinity of the terminal.
The diplomatic mission also reminded travelers that ride-hailing services—such as Uber—are permitted to drop off passengers at the airport but are not authorized to pick them up from the site.
Consequently, it recommended using only clearly marked taxis with visible identification numbers and license plates.
Furthermore, it noted that restrictions for U.S. government employees—which prohibit intercity travel during nighttime hours—remain in effect.
As preventive measures, the consulate recommended monitoring local media outlets for updates on the security situation, following the instructions of local authorities, remaining vigilant, and notifying family and friends of their safety status in the event of any new incidents.
