The renowned folk singer Sonia María Bazanta Vides, better known as Totó la Momposina, passed away in recent hours from natural causes.
According to information obtained by Infobae Colombia, the 85-year-old artist resided in Mexico, where she spent her final months away from the spotlight and media attention.
The artist had retired from performing in 2022 after a long musical career and numerous national and international accolades. According to her son, Marco Vinicio Oyaga, the renowned singer-songwriter suffered a heart attack due to her health condition. “She suffered a heart attack due to the natural progression of her condition. She died peacefully, but what remains most valuable is her legacy: her voice, all her work with Colombian music from the Caribbean and the Pacific, and indeed, all of Colombia, because when she was on stage, it wasn’t just her as the artist, but Colombia itself,” a family member told Blu Radio.
Although her death wasn’t officially confirmed until the morning of Tuesday, May 19, sources informed Infobae Colombia confirmed that the artist had passed away three days earlier in the Central American country.
