Speculation regarding a leave of absence for Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, the Governor of Baja California, has remained at the center of public discourse, stemming from recent accusations by the
U.S. Department of Justice against Rubén Rocha Moya and nine other individuals who allegedly have ties to the Sinaloa Cartel.
This situation takes on particular significance because she could potentially “follow in the footsteps” of her counterpart—who is currently on leave—given that in 2025, both the Governor and her husband had their U.S. visas revoked by the American government.
A meeting convened on May 5 reportedly sparked various theories regarding Marina del Pilar’s continued tenure as state chief executive, as she had summoned legislators and mayors to gather.
However, amidst the controversial news, the spokesperson for the Baja California government, Jesús López Romandía, asserted on Tuesday morning that the meeting did not serve the purpose being circulated on social media and in various media outlets, categorically denying that the Governor intends to request a leave of absence.
