Omar García Harfuch, head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), ruled out the possibility that Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya—currently on leave—is a potential target for attacks.
He made this statement after President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced during her morning press conference this Monday that the state leader had requested security, though she did not provide details regarding the specific reason.
Speaking from the Sinaloa state capital—where Harfuch delivered a message of support to residents following Rocha Moya’s departure, which occurred after the United States accused him of alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel—the SSPC chief denied that the security measures were implemented at the governor’s request. Instead, he stated that the decision stemmed from an assessment conducted by the Security Cabinet itself.
“In this instance, it was not a request; rather, it was recommended that he be assigned a security detail. It is not a large-scale operation; it involves only a few personnel,” he explained, noting that the exact number of bodyguards assigned to the governor is treated as confidential information.
Regarding the factors that prompted authorities to provide protection to Rocha Moya, Harfuch emphasized that his official duties as governor—combined with the prevailing climate of violence in Sinaloa—were the key elements that necessitated this protective measure.
