Amidst the “Cinco de Mayo” festivities, Saturday night brought a surge of excitement to Las Vegas with a high-caliber fight card featuring several Mexican fighters vying for World Titles. The main event starred David Benavidez, who stepped into the ring as the challenger to face Gilberto Ramírez—the defending WBA and WBO Cruiserweight Champion—who was fighting with the aim of sustaining a historic career in Mexican boxing.
In a bout scheduled for 12 rounds and held before a packed house at the T-Mobile Arena, the boxer from Mazatlán failed to retain his World Titles, suffering defeat at the hands of the “Mexican Monster.” Although a native of Phoenix, Arizona, Benavidez is of Mexican descent and, with each passing fight, hopes to earn the trust and support of the Mexican public. Fueled by this motivation, David Benavidez proved to be a “tough nut to crack”; he entered the Las Vegas ring with an imposing presence and secured victory via TKO in the sixth round, following a barrage of powerful blows delivered throughout the fight.
David Benavidez made his ring walk accompanied by traditional Mexican regional music, sporting white trunks accented with green, white, and red trim. Beyond earning the respect of the crowd, he dictated the terms of the fight from the very first rounds; the Phoenix native landed powerful blows to the head of ‘Zurdo’ Ramírez, who barely managed to stay on his feet by the end of the second round.
The boxer from Mazatlán attempted to rally after a difficult start, landing better shots in the subsequent rounds that connected with the “Monster’s” face. However, this did nothing to diminish the challenger’s intensity; Benavidez remained focused—adeptly dodging the Mazatlán fighter’s attacks—while continuing to unleash punches packed with TNT, inflicting the first cut on ‘Zurdo’ just as the fourth round concluded.
