On Tuesday, March 24, 2026, the educational community of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, experienced one of its most tragic days. A 15-year-old student entered the Antón Makarenko Preparatory School armed and shot and killed two teachers in the school’s reception area.
The attack was not only preceded by warning signs on social media but also exposed failures in risk detection and reopened the debate regarding school safety and access to weapons, amidst rising fears of such incidents.
Nine hours before the tragedy, the student—identified as Osmar N.—posted a series of “Stories” on his Instagram account that foreshadowed his intentions.
In total, he uploaded at least four Stories: in the first, he appears dressed entirely in black, posing with an AR-15 rifle in front of a mirror. The caption reads: “Today is the day.”
The videos and photos included hate speech, references to the “incel” movement, images of the Columbine High School massacre, and an image of serial killer Charles Manson. In one of the clips, a message read: “I have decided to send the feminists—who have always ruined my life—back to their Creator (…) I hate feminists.”
The State Attorney General’s Office confirmed that the student—who claimed to be the stepson of a member of the Secretariat of the Navy—took a weapon from his home, although his stepfather denied being the owner of the firearm.
