Costco customers have joined a class-action lawsuit in the United States against the wholesale supermarket chain, demanding that it refund consumers any reimbursements it receives from the federal government for the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump, which were declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

The lawsuit alleges that the company would benefit from “double taxation” if it does not refund shoppers who paid higher prices for imported goods affected by Trump’s tariffs.

The action against Costco was initiated by Matthew Sockov, an Illinois resident, who filed the lawsuit in federal court. It is a proposed class action seeking to represent thousands of customers across the United States affected by the price increases resulting from the tariffs.

What does the lawsuit against Costco allege?

According to the text of the lawsuit, Costco “is in a position to recover the cost of the tariffs twice: first from customers through high prices and then from the government,” which would represent “unjust enrichment.”
