Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez, an icon of Latin American singer-songwriter music, stated yesterday that he would demand his AKM rifle if the United States, which is escalating its threats against the island, were to invade.

“I demand my AKM, if they attack. And let it be known that I say this very seriously,” wrote Rodríguez, 79, on his blog, Segunda Cita, referring to the emblematic Soviet assault rifle.

In an initial post on his blog, Rodríguez, author of more than 500 songs, highlighted President Miguel Díaz-Canel’s promise that Cuba would offer “impregnable resistance” to the aggressor.

“Faced with the worst-case scenario, #Cuba has one certainty: any external aggressor will encounter impregnable resistance,” Díaz-Canel wrote Tuesday night on X, also denouncing Washington’s plans “to take over the country.”

For weeks, Donald Trump has been escalating his offensive rhetoric against Havana and its leaders, while asserting that the island, which is in talks with Washington, wants to “reach an agreement” with the United States.

On Monday, the Republican magnate was particularly harsh, stating that he hoped to have “the honor of taking over Cuba, somehow.”

Cuba, under a U.S. embargo since 1962, confirmed on Friday that it is in talks with its powerful neighbor and released political prisoners as part of an agreement with the Vatican, a long-time mediator between the two countries.
