LAFC Officially Announces Carlos Vela as a Team Investor

Just days after the rumor surfaced, Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) officially announced that its legendary figure, Mexican star Carlos Vela, has joined the club’s ownership group.

The rumors began last week when it was reported that he would be a minority investor. Now, the team has confirmed the next step and will present him in his new role at a press conference on Saturday, March 14, at BMO Stadium. The addition of the former striker to the ownership group reflects LAFC’s strategy of prioritizing continuity and the leadership of those who have defined the team’s identity since its founding.

“LAFC is my home”

“LAFC has always been more than a club to me: it’s my home,” said Carlos Vela in the press release issued by the team. “From day one, we set out to build something special for Los Angeles, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together. Becoming an owner is an honor and a responsibility that I take very seriously. I’m excited to continue supporting the club, our players, and our fans.”

Although the statement doesn’t specify the total percentage he acquired, it was previously reported that it could be six percent of the team.

Vela made history by becoming the first player in the franchise’s history to sign as a Designated Player in August 2017. Over six seasons, he established himself as the team’s all-time leader in games played (152), goals (78), and assists (42). His 2019 campaign, in which he was named MLS MVP after setting a record with 34 goals, is still considered one of the greatest performances in history.

Bennett Rosenthal, LAFC’s managing owner, emphasized that Vela embodies the club’s mentality of excellence. “Since he arrived, he helped define the ‘Black & Gold’ standard and elevate our organization to a global stage,” he said.

Under Vela’s leadership, LAFC won the MLS Cup in 2022 and two Supporters’ Shields (2019 and 2022).
