Violence has once again struck the regional Mexican music scene. Julio César, accordionist for Grupo Arraigado, was shot and killed in broad daylight this Wednesday, February 25, while driving along the Malecón Viejo in Culiacán, Sinaloa.
According to local media outlets such as El Sol de Sinaloa and Los Noticieristas, the attack occurred around 4:30 p.m., when Julio César was driving a late-model Chevrolet pickup truck along Paseo Niños Héroes, also known as the Malecón Viejo.
Witnesses gathered by the news website Café Negro indicate that the musician was intercepted by armed men who opened fire repeatedly, killing him instantly.
Officers from the Sinaloa State Public Security Secretariat (SSP) arrived at the scene, the area was cordoned off, and forensic experts from the State Attorney General’s Office conducted the initial investigation, locating spent shell casings from a handgun at the scene.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene confirmed the absence of vital signs in Julio César, whose body was transferred to the Forensic Medical Service for the official autopsy.
