Twenty-five members of the National Guard lost their lives on February 22, 2016, in Tapalpa, Jalisco, during the operation aimed at capturing Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho,” Mexico’s most wanted drug lord. The mission also resulted in the drug trafficker’s death.
Nahomi Elizabeth, the young woman of only 22 years old who died in the line of duty, was the only woman who was part of the squad that brought down the criminal leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. She was originally from Zacatecas, specifically from the municipality of Guadalupe.
The Preparatory Academic Unit of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas (UAZ), where the young woman studied, publicly bid her farewell: “With courage, honor, and love for her country, she fulfilled her duty serving and protecting her people.” The university expressed its condolences to the family and asked for solidarity during this time of crisis.
