Javier Duarte de Ochoa, former governor of Veracruz, was indicted for his alleged involvement in the embezzlement of 5 million pesos.

During the continuation of the arraignment hearing, held this Tuesday, February 17, at the North Prison in Mexico City, the judge decided to indict the former state governor after the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) presented 38 pieces of evidence against him.

These accusations allege that Duarte misappropriated federal funds in 2012 that were earmarked for social programs for children and senior citizens, which initially totaled 10 million pesos.

However, the Prosecutor’s Office detailed that only 5 million pesos were allocated to the social program, while the remainder was transferred to state government funds, when it should have been returned to the Federal Treasury.

With this indictment, Judge Gustavo Aquiles Villaseñor ordered that Javier Duarte remain in pretrial detention and granted a six-month period for further investigation.
