President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that she has formally rejected the invitation from her US counterpart, Donald Trump, for Mexico to join the Gaza Peace Council, which would supposedly operate similarly to the United Nations (UN).

In her morning press conference, the mayor explained that she has already sent a statement to the US government and clarified that she rejected the invitation because Palestine was not included in the organization.

She reiterated that this was one of the conditions her government set for accepting the invitation.

“We have already sent the statement. In it, we recognize the pursuit of peace in any forum that opens up, but in this case, when it comes specifically to peace in the Middle East, given that we recognize Palestine as a state,” she said at the National Palace.
