Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, responded on Monday to US President Donald Trump’s post of an image in which he refers to himself as the “interim president of Venezuela.” Rodríguez called the image a “Wikipedia cartoon” and stated that Venezuela has a government with her as interim president. She also reminded everyone that there is a “president held hostage” in the United States, referring to Nicolás Maduro.

During the inauguration of a school in La Guaira state, marking the start of the school year, Delcy Rodríguez made a point of reiterating that the country maintains its sovereignty.

“I’ve seen Wikipedia cartoons about who’s in charge in Venezuela; well, here we have a government in charge in Venezuela, here we have an interim president, and there’s a president held hostage in the United States,” she declared.

She added that the Bolivarian government continues to govern “together with the organized people, together with the people’s power.” She also said that the country is moving forward “in respectful international relations, within the framework of international law, to uphold and protect the rights of our beloved Venezuela.”

Relationship with Europe: Towards a New Stage

Later, Acting President Delcy Rodríguez held a meeting at Miraflores Palace with the heads of mission from the member states of the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the Swiss Confederation. Foreign Minister Yván Gil reported afterward that the meeting was “frank, cordial, and pleasant” and that everyone agreed “on the need to move forward into a stage of productive relations, to open increasingly deeper and more intensive channels of dialogue.”

He added that the meeting reviewed trade relations in the areas of production, the economy, science and technology, and other sectors in which European companies have long been established in the country.

“Within the framework of respect, within the framework of the equality of states, we are willing to move forward with a new agenda, an intense work agenda for the well-being of both peoples,” Gil stated.
