Investigation Targets Players, Officials, and Former Galatasaray President
A sweeping investigation into match-fixing and illegal betting has shaken Turkish football, leading authorities to detain nearly 30 individuals—including professional players, club executives, and former leaders of one of the country’s most prominent teams.
The Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed Friday that the arrests are part of an ongoing probe that has already seen six referees and the president of Eyüpspor, a top-division club, jailed in connection with match manipulation.

Among those detained are 14 footballers, the former Galatasaray president Erden Timur, Eyüpspor vice president Fatih Kulaksiz, and a Turkish Football Federation (TFF) official. Six of the suspects allegedly influenced the outcome of the Kasimpasa–Samsunspor match on October 26, 2024, while 14 players reportedly placed bets to sway results in favor of opposing teams during games involving their own squads.
Authorities describe Kasimpasa as a district of Istanbul, while Samsunspor represents the Black Sea region, highlighting the geographic reach of the alleged schemes.
Nationwide Police Operation
The coordinated police action took place across 11 provinces, with Istanbul serving as the central hub of operations, according to the prosecutor’s statement. Investigators also identified a network of businessmen and a former police officer allegedly involved in facilitating betting activities.
Bank records reviewed as part of the investigation revealed suspicious transactions, including large inflows and outflows of cash, attempts to obscure fund sources, and irregular financial activity indicative of gambling-related misconduct.
This is the third wave of enforcement measures stemming from Turkey’s broader effort to root out corruption in football. Last month, the TFF suspended roughly 150 referees for participating in betting schemes, while 25 top-division players and nearly 1,000 athletes from lower leagues were disciplined for similar violations.
