The guilty plea of Joaquín Guzmán López, known as “El Güero” and son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, marks a key moment in the United States’ offensive against the leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel.
After two of the Guzmán brothers (Ovidio and Joaquín Guzmán López) formally pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges, the US government emphasized and warned that the transnational pursuit to capture the rest of the Los Chapitos faction continues.
Following the hearing on Monday, December 1, in the Federal Court for the Northern District of Illinois, where Joaquín Guzmán López pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic drugs and to operate a continuing criminal enterprise, various US government officials publicly celebrated the blow against the Sinaloa Cartel’s structure.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi called the resolution “a major victory” in the crusade to dismantle criminal networks that the government says directly threaten American public health and safety.
