The former mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Colima, and current councilwoman, Gabriela Mejía, was murdered Tuesday afternoon on Javier Mina Street in the El Cariño neighborhood of the municipal capital, while traveling in a car with her brother, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed.
“The FGE reports that it has opened an investigation with a gender perspective following the firearm attack that killed the former mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Colima, Gabriela Mejía M,” the agency reported on X, formerly Twitter.
The former mayor of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) was shot multiple times and died inside the vehicle. So far, no arrests have been made.
The former mayor’s brother, who was driving the vehicle, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a medical center for specialized care. However, he died hours later.
The FGE (Federal Executive Branch) indicated that it immediately deployed its personnel, consisting of state investigators, Public Ministry agents, and forensic experts, who established a perimeter cordon at the scene to conduct initial investigations and gather the necessary evidence,” the Colima Prosecutor’s Office added.
“Furthermore, we are working in coordination with other state and federal institutions to clarify the events and bring those responsible to justice.” The Governor of Colima, Indira Vizcaíno, condemned the murder of the councilwoman on social media. “I have been informed that a few moments ago, the former mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Gaby Mejía, suffered an attack in which she lost her life and another person was also injured. I express my condemnation and regret at this act of violence,” she wrote.
The murder of the PRI member, who was also the state leader of the National Organization of PRI Women (ONMPRI) in Colima, was also condemned by the national leader of the PRI party, Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas.
