The warnings of ‘El Mayo’ Zambada: One year after his capture, the drug trafficking structure challenges the Mexican State

More than a year has passed since the capture of Ismael El Mayo Zambada García, one of the founding leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel; and the beginning of a bloody drug war between factions of the criminal group known as Los Chapitos, led by Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, son of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán, against Los Mayos, led by Ismael Zambada Sicairos, alias Mayito Flaco and son of El Mayo Zambada.

Following the events, the security advances presented by the current administration in the face of armed conflict in various Mexican states are reminiscent of the occasion when Ismael Zambada García confessed that drug trafficking is as much a part of society as corruption, interpreting the government as being late to the fight against drug trafficking and corruption, where actions will not change the criminal system.

“One day I decided to surrender to the government so they could shoot me. My case should be exemplary, a warning to everyone. They shot me, and euphoria erupted. But as the days went by, we realized that nothing had changed.”
