The remains of Silverio Villegas, a migrant who died during a raid by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents north of Chicago, will be repatriated this Thursday to Irimbo, Michoacán.
Eleven days after his death, Silverio’s body will touch Michoacán soil tomorrow; it will arrive in the afternoon in the town of Loma de Chupio, his hometown, confirmed personnel from the Michoacán Migrant Secretariat.
Silverio Villegas, 38, a cook by trade, died after being shot while trying to escape detention. The Michoacán migrant was reportedly subdued in the presence of his two minor children.
The incident occurred on September 12 in Franklin Park, Illinois, and prompted condemnation from Mexico. Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) called on U.S. authorities to investigate the incident.
ICE defended its agents’ actions, stating that Villegas-González “attempted to drive his vehicle into the arresting team, striking an agent and dragging him as he fled the scene.”
Fearing for his life, the agent discharged his firearm, striking the man. Both the agent and the man received immediate medical attention and were taken to a hospital.
The death of the man, who authorities say was in the United States illegally, was confirmed at the hospital, while the agent suffered “serious injuries,” according to ICE.
