The consortium led by Grupo FCC, controlled by Carlos Slim, has received a contract valued at more than €1.5 billion (approximately $1.767 billion) for the expansion of the Second Avenue Subway Line in New York City.
This project represents the largest recent contract for the Spanish company in the United States and marks a significant step forward in the expansion of the city’s transportation system infrastructure.
The project will be carried out by the Connect Plus Partners (Connect+) consortium, formed by FCC Construcción and Halmar International. The contract includes the design and construction of two tunnels that will connect new stations in the Harlem neighborhood, extending the line from the Upper East Side to East Harlem.
The contract also covers the conversion of a 762-meter tunnel, built in the 1970s, into a station. In addition, a new 2,560-meter tunnel will be excavated to Malcolm X Boulevard and the 125th Street station will be opened.
Two variable-density tunnel boring machines, adapted to different types of terrain, will be used for the project, allowing efficient operation in soft soil and hard rock.
