Sergio Ángel Soriano Buendía is the name of the Banking and Industrial Police (PBI) officer who helped Alicia Matías and her granddaughter, Zule, after a gas pipeline explosion on the La Concordia Bridge in Iztapalapa last Wednesday, September 10th. For this reason, the officer earned the respect of the entire Mexican population. However, this is not the first time he has performed outstandingly.

A decade ago, he also made headlines for returning more than 42,000 pesos in cash found in a Polanco parking lot.

One of the first images to go viral after the gas pipeline explosion on the La Concordia Bridge in Iztapalapa was the one in which police officer Sergio Soriano is seen carrying a baby in his arms and walking alongside Alicia Matías. Both had severe burns on various parts of their bodies, and the officer was responsible for protecting them and taking them to a safe place.

After taking Alicia and her granddaughter Zule to a safe place, Officer Sergio Soriano stated that he had accidentally encountered her sister and brother-in-law, who were traveling on a motorcycle. Because the minor was unconscious and severely burned, the officer asked his relative for help in transporting the minor to an IMSS hospital near the scene of the tragedy. This action was captured on video by the officer himself and somehow reached social media, where his heroism was more than demonstrated, earning him the respect of thousands of internet users.

Sergio Soriano said that after leaving Mrs. Alicia’s granddaughter at the IMSS hospital, he returned to ground zero of the explosion and, visibly moved, he remembered that he helped several more people get to safety. He mentioned that there was a second explosion and that he feared for his life, however, this did not stop him and he continued helping in any way he could. He also mentioned that, as a result, he temporarily lost his senses of taste and smell due to all the gases he breathed. However, he mentioned that the most serious after-effect was psychological, as he confessed that it has not been easy to process everything he saw.
