Actress Yalitza Aparicio broke her silence on the racist, classist, and misogynistic comments she received after her rise to fame in 2018, the year she rose to international acclaim with Alfonso Cuarón’s film, Roma.
It was in that same year that Yalitza Aparicio stole headlines, first for being an Indigenous woman who became an actress and then for the multiple nominations she received for her role as Cleo, including the Ariel Awards, the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Hollywood Film Awards (where she won in the Best New Actress category), the Gotham Awards, and the Oscars.
Later, she became the cover of prestigious fashion-focused magazines, precisely where the controversy began for wearing luxury and exclusive brands. This also led to hate, racism, and classism, which she defends today.
A few hours ago, the 31-year-old actress shared a video on Instagram from the Tecito de Calzón podcast, in which she discusses precisely all of the above and the criticism she received for being an Indigenous woman who occupied white spaces created for white people. In a brief message, the star from Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, thanked Mariana Calva and Dama G for the excellent analysis they conducted of her case and how her success became an act of violence on the part of society, but also an act of resistance on her part.
One of the topics the influencers touched on in their podcast was fashion, recalling how Yalitza was questioned and criticized for wearing designer and renowned brand clothing instead of traditional Oaxacan clothing. Now, the actress asserts that she has the right to wear these designs, just as everyone else can wear artisanal and handmade garments.
