President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated that Washington is more unsafe than Mexico City, after her US counterpart, Donald Trump, deployed the National Guard due to the high crime and homicide rates. At her morning press conference, she rejected the claim that Mexico City is the most unsafe city in Latin America, as claimed by the Republican. When asked, she said, “First, that Washington was more unsafe than Mexico City, which is true.”
“Now, what we disagree with is when he said it’s the most unsafe city in Latin America, because Mexico City is not the most unsafe city in Latin America. There are other cities that have higher crime rates per 100,000 inhabitants,” she emphasized.
She explained that the homicide rate is measured by the number of homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, and in Mexico City, there are more than 9 million, while in Washington, there are 700,000.
“Washington had 187 homicides, Mexico City in 2024, 978. One might say, well, Mexico City had more than Washington. Yes, Mexico City alone has more than 9 million inhabitants, and Washington, as I said, has 700,000 inhabitants. So, the rate is 27 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in the case of Washington, and in the case of Mexico City, it’s 10 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants,” he emphasized.
