Release Ordered for ‘La Mojón,’ Niece of Former Los Zetas Leaders

A Tamaulipas state judge ordered the release of Sofía del Carmen Monsiváis Treviño, alias La Mojón, alleged leader of the Northeast Cartel. According to local and federal authorities, she is the niece of brothers Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales, known as Z-40, and Óscar Omar, known as Z-42, former leaders of Los Zetas currently imprisoned in the United States.

Martha Patricia Rodriguez Salinas, a judge of the Superior Court of Justice of the aforementioned state, acquitted the woman of the crimes of criminal association, public servants, and aggravated homicide.

Pedro Javier Venegas Grimaldo, head of the Case Monitoring Unit of the Courtroom in Ciudad Victoria, announced the ruling in criminal case CP0004/2018.

Who is ‘La Mojón’?

Sofía del Carmen Monsiváis Treviño is identified by local and federal authorities as the niece of brothers Miguel Treviño Morales, El Z-40, and Óscar Omar Treviño Morales, El Z-42, leaders and founders of the Los Zetas cartel.

La Mojón is also identified as the likely perpetrator of the attack on security personnel at the 16th Federal Social Readaptation Center on May 10, 2019, an attack that left five guards dead.
