Christian Alberto Muñoz, originally from Navojoa, Sonora, and known in the world of regional Mexican music as Betillo Guerrero, was arrested on July 6 in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, after a violent confrontation with municipal police officers that ended with the death of Officer Alfredo Gómez Méndez.
The arrest of the 35-year-old singer has put a spotlight on his career in narcocorrido music and his alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel, amid the growing criminal dispute in the region.
According to official reports, Muñoz—also known by the alias El Irremediable—was arrested along with eight other people in downtown San Cristóbal, after they allegedly beat a municipal police officer who tried to break up an altercation.
According to witnesses and videos posted online, the officer was struck in the head with the butt of a firearm by a man wearing a hat, whom authorities identify as the singer. The attack caused head trauma that led to the officer’s death hours later.
During the subsequent operation, coordinated by state and federal forces, four handguns, an assault rifle, and three vehicles were seized, including a Ford Territory, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and a Mustang. Those arrested—including a man identified as “El 300,” alleged lieutenant of “El Güero Pulseras”—reportedly confessed to belonging to the Sinaloa Cartel.
