Julio César Chávez Jr., son of the historic boxing champion with roots in Sonora and a strong presence in Sinaloa, established a family connection with the entourage of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, known as El Chapo, after marrying Frida Muñoz in 2016. Muñoz had previously been in a relationship with Édgar Guzmán López, one of the sons of the former Sinaloa Cartel leader.
Through that union, Chávez Jr. also became close to Frida Sofía Guzmán, Muñoz and Édgar’s daughter, born in September 2005 in Culiacán. This indirect family connection linked him circumstantially to the Guzmán surname, although his professional career always focused on sports and social media. Édgar Guzmán López died in 2008 in a violent incident in a parking lot in the Tres Ríos area of the Sinaloa capital. That day, he was accompanied by close friends when he was the victim of an armed attack.
Various versions indicate that the incident may have been caused by confusion amid internal tensions within the criminal group, which would later lead to fractures within the cartel.
The death of Édgar, brother of Ovidio Guzmán and Joaquín Guzmán López—both currently imprisoned in the United States—marked a sensitive episode in the history of the Guzmán family and in the internal dynamics of the organization.
Unwittingly, years later, Chávez Jr. would become a father figure for Frida Sofía Guzmán, who, growing up, pursued a career as a regional Mexican singer, distancing herself from the world of drug trafficking, unlike her uncles and grandparents.
Over the years, Julio César Chávez Jr. has remained visible on social media and in public events, without his name being directly linked to criminal activities or the Sinaloa Cartel.
Despite the kinship between his stepdaughter and the Guzmán family, the former boxer has maintained an image focused on his personal and professional life.
