An armed group massacred eight people and seriously injured 12 more at a party celebrating San Juan in the popular Barrio Nuevo neighborhood of Irapuato.

Among the injured is a 2-year-old boy who received a splinter wound to the eye and is in critical condition.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. yesterday, Tuesday, at a home on Bustamante Street, at the corner of Comonfort Street, when neighbors and families gathered to celebrate San Juan with food, music, and dancing.

Then, an unknown group of armed individuals forced their way into the building’s courtyard and began shooting indiscriminately, despite the presence of children at the party.

A video of a Facebook live stream is circulating on social media. A user restricted their profile after the attack. It is unknown whether the person who took the video is dead, injured, or unharmed. In the video, people can be seen celebrating and dancing when suddenly a series of thunderous explosions are heard, and the camera moves abruptly, even showing people covered in blood.

The terrorists then fled without incident, although this is no longer seen in the video.

At least 10 municipal police patrol cars arrived at the scene, as well as a unit from the Irapuato Victim Assistance Center.

Members of the National Guard and the Mexican Army later arrived. Members of the Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office arrived later, including experts from the Forensic Medical Service, who at press time had not yet finished removing the bodies of the victims.

This is the 17th massacre so far this year in the state of Guanajuato.
