She says Donald Trump isn’t ‘selling pineapples.’ President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed this Friday, April 25, that there are also many undocumented Americans in Mexico, out of an estimated population of 1.5 million, although “they are welcomed here with warmth.”
“Many (Americans in the country) also don’t have documents, they come here and stay, and from many economic levels, from a very diverse range, especially young people, they come to Mexico, not only to Mexico City, but to many states in the republic because many work remotely,” she declared during her morning press conference.
Sheinbaum made these statements while defending the contribution of Mexicans to the United States economy, including nearly 5 million undocumented immigrants, while President Donald Trump has promised mass deportations.
Americans in Mexico used to settle only in Sonora, Sinaloa, and Baja California Sur, but in recent years they have settled as digital nomads in Mexico City neighborhoods such as the Roma and Condesa neighborhoods.
“So, Mexico is a wonderful place to live. They come to Mexico, are warmly welcomed here, and work from here,” he said.
The presence of Americans also causes controversy because Mexico City residents accuse them of exacerbating gentrification, while this week there was a protest in Mazatlán against one of them who refused to let a worker eat on the sidewalk in front of his house.
