After meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and the Homeland Security Cabinet, Kristi Noem asserted that there is still “much work to be done” regarding migration and drug trafficking.
However, the U.S. Homeland Security Secretary acknowledged Mexico’s deployment of National Guard (GN) troops to prevent drug trafficking and the entry of illegal migrants, as well as its acceptance of deportation flights.
“The deployment of National Guard troops to the border and Mexico’s acceptance of deportation flights is a positive step,” she wrote on social media.
Noem asserted that there is still “much work to be done” to stop the entry of migrants and drugs into the United States, so the collaboration will continue with the intention of benefiting both regions in terms of security.
“Our collaboration will help make the United States and Central America safe again,” she emphasized.
This is the first visit to Mexico by an official in President Donald Trump’s current cabinet, and it comes just days before the imposition of 25% tariffs on Mexican products, scheduled for April 2, goes into effect.
During her morning press conference, President Sheinbaum announced that the meeting would be held to share the work being done on security in coordination with the United States.
“More than just providing information, we are going to share with her what is being done and also the coordination and collaboration that has been established with the United States in the framework of defense,” the president commented.
