Donald Trump told supporters at a Saturday rally for Ohio senate candidate Bernie Moreno that some undocumented immigrants aren’t human.
According to the Washington Post, while talking about undocumented immigrants accused of crimes, Trump said, “I don’t know if you call them people. In some cases they’re not people, in my opinion. But I’m not allowed to say that because the radical left says that’s a terrible thing to say.”
His comments came as the GOP remains focused on making illegal immigration a central issue of the 2024 presidential election. “Among my very first actions upon taking office will be to stop the invasion of our country,” Trump said Saturday.
“In some cases they’re not people, in my opinion. But I’m not allowed to say that because the radical left says that’s a terrible thing to say.”
Border officials, including some who worked in the Trump administration, have said that most migrants who cross the border are members of vulnerable families fleeing violence and poverty, and available data does not support the idea that migrants are spurring increases in crime.
Since long before his election in 2016 Donald Trump has attacked undocumented immigrants, whom he sees as criminals coming to sell drugs, commit crimes and steal jobs. His signature policy, to build a wall on the Mexican border, has been fitfully effected, though without the alligator moat he reportedly wanted. When Mr Trump first promised to construct the wall, he said it would have a “big beautiful door” to let in legal migrants. In fact, under his administration, legal migrants are finding themselves shut out too.
