Denim Day is a campaign that takes place annually on the last Wednesday of April to raise awareness about sexual assault and support survivors of sexual violence. The campaign originated in Italy in 1992, after a young girl was raped by her driving instructor.
The perpetrator was initially convicted, but the ruling was overturned when the Italian Supreme Court ruled that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her attacker remove them, therefore implying consent. Women in the Italian Parliament protested the ruling by wearing jeans to work, and the idea spread internationally.
Today, Denim Day is a global movement in which people wear jeans to show solidarity with survivors and to challenge myths and misconceptions about sexual assault. It is a reminder that clothing choices do not cause or justify sexual violence, and that consent is always necessary.
